I am doing pretty much exactly what Donovan has described, two minis colocated at MacMiniColo.net. The primary mini is a 40GB 1.25GHz G4 running WebDNA 4.x and OS X 10.3. I've got it set up with Apple Remote Desktop so I can jump on and remote control any time, I also have SSH access in case there's some reason ARD lets me down. The second mini is an 80GB 1.42GHZ, and I've partitioned the drive into two volumes. The first volume just has the OS and has its own unique IP address. The second volume is used for cloning the primary mini. The two are connected with FireWIre, using FireWire over IP and putting them both on their own non-routable subnet. Every hour the primary mini's HD is cloned to the second mini's second partition via FIreWire, so I'm never lost more than an hour's worth of data in the event of a disaster. Should the primary server go down, I simply jump onto the secondary and tell it to reboot using the second partition, and within 30 seconds I'm back up and running. I think the mini is a great option for Web serving, and even more so now given that you can drop 4GB of RAM in there, and you can attach another mini via FW 800 instead of just FW 400. The one thing that might be of concern to some is the hard drive rotational speed, because some of the early models were only 4200RPM and even the new ones just announced are still 5400 RPM. If that's an issue, it's not that difficult to replace it with a 7200RPM drive. Otherwise, it's got gig Enet, don't really see any other downside. The colo prices are very reasonable at macminicolo.net, but there are other facilities that will also host minis at very reasonable rates. And if you're striving to be "green," the mini's power consumption of 13W when idle surely makes it the greenest Web server on the planet. I don't work for Apple or macminicolo.net, just a happy customer... On Mar 3, 2009, at 2:40 PM, Donovan Brooke wrote: > Palle Bo Nielsen wrote: >> Still in beta though.
