Briefly (you may have to do some of your own research on linux administration), I like to create my editing tools to run using the webserver group id. Ie. my FTP account in your situation would be: user:whatever group:www Then, and this is important with a setup like this, you want to change your umask settings to allow write access for group. umask 002 This will make your web directories 755 and your public files 644, which allows write access by group ID. Note:, you will have to change the existing files manually at first, because umask only controls permissions for files/directories while creating them.
