From what I read, it appeared that Ubuntu was more server focused. I'll defer to you guys as to which is better. If Debian/Apache is considered the better combination I'm fine with that. Debian is more technical than Ubuntu (which is a Debian dressed up) but it = also uses less resources and gives a deeper control.
Ubuntu is easier to manage
CentOS is also easy to manage
nginx will use less resources than apache and might be a little faster
apache is much better documented than nginx

I suppose a Debian + nginx can run on a small VPS with as little as 128MB R= AM
