Counting downloads

texte = I'm setting up a mechanism whereby visitors with the right name and password can download files from a directory. As they will have a set number of downloads available to them, I would like their record in the database to be decremented by one each time they download a file, but I have no way of knowing if the download was successful. Is there a way to wait until they have completed the download before I trip the counter in the database?
