Back in September I needed to program a subscription based messaging matching sort of thing that would be very similar to what a dating service site might require. Needed a database for people and there profiles, needed to keep track of paid subscriptions and process CC payments, needed to allow messaging between users without revealing e-mail addresses, etc, etc. Users needed to login and I need to keep track of logins, sessions, membership level, paid stats, etc, etc as a person moved from page to page.I sent my database spec to Steve C. at MGI and Nathan and Steve N. at WebSiphon. Both said that my app was do-able, but would take them weeks for them to get to a point in their work schedule before they could help me and both indicated that the site would have a long development period. Subsequently Steve Crisp said that MGI would not be able to do what I wanted to do, but MGI 2 (not even in beta as I write this) would be able to do. I need the job done in less then 30 days. I talked up the application on both the MGI and WebSiphon talk list and pretty much got the same answers as the product developers were giving me. Do-able, but difficult, and long development time.Blueworld (lasso) and pervasive (tango) never even replied to inquiries.WebCat was out of the question due to it's price tag. Then Dale from colony.net turned me on to TyphoonPro. For those who don't know, Tpro is WebCat without the e-commerce tags and only cost me $495. Since I didn't need the e-commerce tags anyway, I downloaded an evaluation copy and jumped in... (in a previous life I programmed in C -- FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC and RPG before that) [Everyone under 30 now asks, What's RPG?]I plowed into my application, asked a few newbie questions on this very list... got some great answers from some of the users... and I was able to get the site on-line in less then a week. I'm not kidding. It is only through the support offered by other WebCat-ers on this list that I have any confidence in this software at all, and as long as they are around, and as long as TPro doesn't explode... I suppose I will survive. Will I buy an upgrade to some future version of WebCat? Probably not.___Joe___ _________________________________________________ Joseph D'Andrea JoeDan@West21.com WEST21.com Internet services for the 21st Century http://www.west21.com/ _________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------- Brought to you by CommuniGate Pro - The Buzz Word Compliant Messaging Server.
