texte = After spending some time conducting tests and going oh and ah at the results i thought aboutlooking around for some real performance. The Highend Xserve is quoted at having 15 Gigaflops of processing power. You can squeeze480Gb of IDE HardDrive space into them and slap on 2gb of ram. - this sounds tre'impressive. The current speed title holder for computers is held by a machine called the Earth Simulator andis made by NEC.This machine is just fantastic. It has 37 TeraFlops of processing power. Roughly translated as 37000 gigaflops. It has 10TB ofram, 700Tb of Storage and 1.6Pb of offline storage. 37 TeraFlops is actually nominalperformance because peak performance is 43TeraFlops. This is not obviously an off the shelfcomputer as it contains 5104 Processors, 1800 Miles of Copper Cable, consums three floors of abuilding, each, four tennis courts in size and is faster than the next 19 fastest computers in theworld combined...What is interesting though is, amongst the 5-8000 processor machines in the top 20 is a little 128Processor Machine by NEC that IS off the shelf and WILL fit inside a delivery van and iscompletely scalable from 2 to 512 processors.I'm not trying to compare apples with apples but it is just interesting as all... Apple Make usbelieve that there Hardware is the kick ass fastestest stuff available and its just not anywhere nearclose to anything... or maybe i am just naive. When you hear things in the grapevine like I hear google is run on 1600 unix servers youthink, wow computers can't be that fast if they need 1600 of them to power google. There areother things that make you wonder as well. Our Biggest ISP in New Zealand is a companycalled Xtra which has 750,000 customers and its core network is still made up of 486's. There is defineitly a lot of disparity between what some people think is fast and what is actuallyfast. - its just interesting is all...Well i said it was off topic didn't I???All information found here: www.top500.org ------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
