Though the majority of users probably will only care about "not getting a pop-up" and seeing the paddalock or https, there is a depth of other protections going on depending upon your CA. Geotrust (for example) is linked to one of the credit agencies. They also have a specific means of acquiring a cert that helps insure "real" identity. In other companies, there is a level of "research" that goes on to gain identity of the issuee. I don't know all the ins and outs but it isn't rocket science. basically, choose the right solution for your needs. You are probably not going to get by with an instantSSL cert for a financial institution. However, instantSSL seems to work fine in most browsers.. thus they may be fine for an eCommerse store. Also, if your are inside a protected area (A LAN or WAN), creating your own cert may be just fine.
