Like a good number of you, I've been using WebCat/DNA since 1998 and I've had more than my share of problems with SMSI randing from paying upgrade charges when we switched platforms but not versions and dealing with none existent support - save for those of you on this list. I've even been told by sales that the Partner Edition would work for my company just to find out that we also needed the domains add-ons (that is doing all the purchasing paperwork for the Partner Edition). But after all that, I've stood by DNA simply because it is the simplest (and yet the most function) language I've used. There's a simple beauty in typing [search db=domains.db&neSKUdata=find_all&asSKUsort=1] [founditems] [SKU] [SITE] [TITLE] [GRAPHIC] [/founditems] [/search] as opposed to: "; # select the database $rs= @mysql_select_db("domains", $conn) or die("Cannot locate database"); # create query $sql="select SKU,SITE,TITLE,GRAPHIC from main ORDER BY SKU"; # execute query $rs=mysql_query($sql,$conn); ?> I remember the days when the PCS/SMSI guys were on the board and would answer questions and I could get answers from Doug and Sal (not to mention the others whose names elude me now). It reminds me of another great product that's faded - WebSTAR (pre-Quarterdeck buyout). At that time, Stephanie Wright was always on the message board willing to help and you could even call Starnine directly and talk to her. I know I've tried calling SMSI for help - even on installs in the very beginning - and gotten the "we don't support that over the phone" line. So I, like so many others before me, have been forced to take the plunge into PHP because I've yet to find a client who wants something written in a proprietary language that only 100 or so people in the country know. I lose track of all the various programs I've used DNA to write. But as someone who's started with simple database searches, and progressed onto threaded message boards, content management systems, live-event scoring systems and fantasy games using DNA, it's going to take much more than one email to convince me to start using DNA as serious commercial platform again. It's a shame - DNA is the best I've used and I'd hate to think gray my hair would be without it. Just my $.02 and I do thank all of my fellow developers for their help over the last 8 years. ----------------------------------------- Steve Dannaway IT Director & General Counsel JM Associates, Inc. www.fishfactory.com 501-372-6544 ------------------------------------------------------------- This message is sent to you because you are subscribed to the mailing list .
