It seems that BBEdit has a fixed width in its windows. But, I have never lost any data due to this. It just makes it a pain to edit (I have to scroll all the way to the right, add carriage returns until I can edit the data, then remove the carriage returns). Unfortunately, I am not sure that any other text editor would fare any better.
