texte = I've been lurking on this list for a few days to try and get some idea ofwhat WebCatalog is about. It sounds like a very robust piece of software and I like what I read aboutit on the Starnine site. But I have some questions. These probably seem like very basic questionsto many of you and it would probably be best if you respond privately to
to avoid clogging up the list.I am developing a Web site for a client who will eventually have a commercedatabase containing 10s of thousands of items for sale. He will need asystem that can interface with the database, give the customers a shoppingcart and process orders. Pretty basic, right? I haven't looked beyondthat for any bells and whistles, but I'm open to suggestions.Do you think WebCatalog is the best solution? Why? What experience do youhave with other commerce systems? If I were to install WC (most likely on a Mac, but possibly an NT), and itwas working primarily as the commerce system for this large commerce site, could it still be used for other commerce sites? Can it serve multipledomains? Is there any additional cost for adding domains it serves? Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of?What do you think is the best way to create the database? FileMakerPro? Orsomething else? What do you think of a Lasso/FilemarkerPro commerce server solution? It'sless expensive. Do any of you have any experience with it? Is it robustenough? It seems, based on reading this list, that customizing WC takes some time, experience and knowledge. Can it be an out-of-box solution, or must it be customized? Finally, if I wanted to hire you to set up this commerce site for my clientusing WC, how much would you charge me/him? (Customers need a section wherethey can click on featured items and be given a chance to read more aboutit and then add it to their shopping cart or search the database (of 10s ofthousands of items) and add what they want to their shopping cart. So, I'mcollecting bids on setting this up. If you are making a bid, you mightwant to include a very brief resume and some URLs showing examples of yourwork.Best,H.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Howard Owenshoward@companytown.com
