texte = The capability to capture information about the use of a WebDNA serialnumber has been present in 4.X for quite some time, not just recently, andthe End User License agreement stated this clearly in those earlier versionsas well. I wouldn't characterize this as being secretly slipped in. Wedidn't put out a press release announcing this capability, but we shouldn'tneed to as this capability in no way affects the functioning of the productand does NOT expose private data. We are not capturing any information thatwe don't already have in our sales database for each serial number soldother than the number of instances of a serial number running on uniqueservers.Besides assisting with the detection of piracy or even outright theft of aserial number from a legitimate registered owner, this information alsoallows us to see how many of the different editions are in use, howfrequently the demo is downloaded and put into use, how fast maintenancereleases are adopted and migrated, etc., all of which help us understand howthe product is being used and how fast new versions are adopted by ourcustomers. All of this helps us better support our customer community. Ihave to believe that the damage piracy inflicts on our ability to supportour customers is obvious to people of integrity. In the case of license violations our policy has always been to contactthose individuals and/or companies individually to further understand theirneeds and work productively towards a solution. Perhaps they are simplyperforming a migration to a new server or software upgrade ... reasonabletemporary needs that we don't consider to represent an outright violation ofthe license. Our goal is to understand and address our customer's businessneeds while helping them come into compliance with the licensing structureof the product.Phil B.-----Original Message-----From: Kenneth GromeTo: WebDNA-Talk@talk.smithmicro.comSent: 4/12/03 8:33 PMSubject: Re: (p2) WebDNA 5 - Privacy Issue (Built in sniffer)>>(e) Periodically, the software will make a secure SSL connection to >>Smith Micro's server and report the following information:>>>>Product Name>>Product Version>>Serial Number>>Host Name>>---->>>>Does this mean, that Smith Micro's WebDNA software actually reports >>back to the company - information on Host Name, Serial Number etc...Yes of course that's exactly what it means ... but this was added in version 4, not in version 5.
