Mark, your solution is very viable. I usually check against a database of "purchased" carts. RAM db lookups are very fast and they don't set any text vars. In this scenerio, I will only issue a new cart if the cart has been purchased... But like I said, there is more than one way to skin a cat and your solution seems like it would work.
