If you are still going to be creating a user doc .pdf, perhaps keep it up to date online and send out an email blast to registered users either including the updated pdf which includes a revision date in it's title or a notice that a revised doc is now available for download with a link to download it. And as 7.0 is coming out, note any new tags with (new in 7.0) and any tags no longer being used in 7 note it as (6.2 only or N/A) so the same doc can be provide for 6.2 and 7.0 users. Also, it would be really nice if there was a glossary/cross reference for all tags and operators. The current documentation only lists main topics. I sometimes spend time looking for exact syntax for some things that I may not have used for a while. For instance I recently could not find where to find the correct syntax for "ALLREQD" within the online docs. I knew it was an abbreviation of ALLREQUIRED but wasn't sure. After looking in several main topics, beginning with the topic "searching", in the online docs, I gave up and opened a page where I've previously used this.StevePsi Prime Inc, Matthew A Perosi wrote:> I would also prefer a set of local docs too.> Even if I have to download the docs and install them separately.>> Matt>>> On 1/27/2011 9:15 AM, Kenneth Grome wrote:>>>> > We would prefer not provide local docs: one single>>>> > operation can update anything in the docs, while local>>>> > docs are sometimes stuck for years with outdated>>>> > informations.>>>> Okay, I guess I can always httrack the docs so I can have my own >> local copy, but I won't think about doing this very often once I get >> my first copy ... so I'll end up being one of the people with >> outdated docs.>>>> What would be far better for people like me who frequently develop >> offline might be for WSC to generate a new copy of downloadable docs >> every time they do something that updates the online docs. Okay, I guess I canalways httrack the docs so I can have my own local copy, but I won'tthink about doing this very often once I get my first copy ... so I'llend up being one of the people with outdated docs.
What would be far betterfor people like me who frequently develop offline might be for WSC togenerate a new copy of downloadable docs every time they do somethingthat updates the online docs. Along with this, a valuable service thatemails subscribers (or people on this list) to tell them that a newversion of the docs has been created.
This is the type ofservice that sets excellent companies apart from the rest. Just mythoughts on the matter ...
Sincerely,
Kenneth Grome
