And since you seem to have permissions right (from what little I know) then the problem is not just necessarily caused by wrong permissions. My recommendation is to email Le Pham directly... she is the unix specialist at SM. (I will email you her address directly offlist). She asked me to give her all details if the problem ever occured again so that she could try to reproduce it on SM boxes.
