I'm not taking a stance on either side and in fact, with my new OSX system, am planning on trying to learn Linux/Apache/PHP/MySQL.Regarding loosing Data.. I think this is user controled and doesn't have to be an issue. If you have crashing problems (WebCAT for us (4.5v) hasn't crashed once), then you could commit databases or flushdatabases more often to keep from losing data. Sure, it doesn't solve the crashing problem but it solves the losing data problem. Also, WebCAT (WebDNA) runns on many platforms.
