If not using a sandbox: I can use any email address, fake or not, as the from of a [sendmail] and the email will post to the EmailPending directory, the email will send and then move to the EmailCompleted directory. It took me a while to figure that out, and I can demonstrate it on all of my servers. I do not understand the underlying mechanics behind it, but the problem does have something to do with my email server settings. About 2 years ago I installed an Astaro box that detects false email addresses and bounces emails with bad senders. When I installed the Astaro box I expected to reprogram all of my websites, but was amazed to find that the non-sandbox sites were still functioning. So basically, I believe there is a bug in the system.
