It has no semantic content and the underlying meaning (which the readers may or may not catch) goes something like: "SmithMicro lost the plot but it wouldn't be polite to say that so we added a meaningless phrase here instead." "WebDNA users began to lose support from the owners" is a bit clumsy language but I'm not quite sure how to rephrase it.
