I've looked at a lot of addresses, and most other countries use a slightly different format. That's not to say that there aren't other countries that use an extremely similar format. What I have tried to avoid is coercing non-U.S. addresses into a U.S. format, which I've seen done, and seems offensive to me. You haven't put your Australian state into the address below, so I can't see the standard format. There was a time when I was quite familiar with Australian address formats, but I have forgotten. But don't Australian addresses have the post code before the state, like here's one: "Glebe 2037 NSW"? If I use my U.S. address format for Australian addresses, they will always get printed wrong: "Glebe NSW 2037". The same holds for English addresses. I find this unacceptable. Thus I have non-U.S./non-Canadian addressees put their correct local format in the city line. But this is not what I would recommend for an Australian based site or piece of software, of course. My system was designed for software which has mostly U.S. addresses. And it's designed to enable maximum validation on U.S. and Canadian addresses without coercing non-U.S./non-Canadian addresses to an incorrect format. I validate addresses and I do automated list cleanup, automated National Change of Address on U.S. addresses, AVS on credit cards, etc.--so the "textarea" approach would not be suitable for my purposes.
