texte = 2380Hi Stuart,Your Christmas story clearly explains the practical reasonfor using VPS hosts instead of running your own hardware. But the guys who continue to insist upon running their ownhardware -- especially ancient MacOS hardware -- are nevergoing to change. They are stubborn, inflexible, and unwillingto learn and do whatever it takes to have a modern systemthat avoids all their ongoing "run my own hardware" issues.I no longer remember exactly when I switched from running myown hardware to using VPS hosting, but I do remember that Iswitched while I was still living in Hawaii, and I moved fromHawaii in the year 2000, so I would say that I switched abouttwo decades ago, or maybe a couple years earlier. So now it is 20+ years after I learned how and why VPS helpsme to run a better system for my clients, yet we still havepeople here who do not get it, regardless of how much we tryto convince them.I agree with everything you wrote. Several of us here havetried but failed to convince these "I still love my hardware"guys to just suck-it-up and make the switch to VPS hosting. But they continue to ignore our advice because their agendais NOT saving time or having reliable servers that requireminimal time and effort to maintain. And clearly they do not value their time at more than a fewcents per hour, or they would not reconfigure a bad server50 times and still not get it fixed.I'm tired of trying to convince these WebDNA programmingcolleagues that there's a better way. They seem incapableof learning from those of us who recognized how the industrywas changing years or decades ago, and switched to VPShosting long ago.Don't get me wrong. I used to be 100% dedicated to AppleMacintosh, too. I owned 5 of them in my early programmingand hosting days and I loved them and the MacOS!But this dedication faded dramatically in the early 1990's asI learned how cheap and easy it was for me to stop wastingtime and money running my own hardware, and just pay theprofessional hosting companies a minuscule pittance eachmonth to do it for me.=20Furthermore prices have dropped substantially since then, andat the same time hardware is much faster now, and reliabilityhas increased dramatically.Right now I run three VPS's with three different hosts, eachin a different city. They backup each other automaticallyevery hour, and they backup each other's backups every 24hours. This may sound like ridiculous redundancy, but ...Even if two of my three servers should go down at the sametime, my clients will never be without a live server for morethan an hour while the DNS changes propagate -- and it costsme less than $10 per month for all three servers:Server #1 =3D $5.00 per monthServer #2 =3D $3.50 per monthServer #3 =3D $0.83 per month (I pay this one $10 annually)Not only that, but these are all modern Linux servers thatnever seem to fail anyways. You might think that eventually these "I love my hardware"guys might want to give up their death-grips on their oldequipment and start doing what the rest of us have been doingfor ages. But I suspect that this is never going to happen. To each his own!And although I wish the best to all WebDNA programmers andhosts, I also wish WSC had made the decision years ago tostop building new WebDNA versions for Mac or Windows, andinstead focused exclusively on Linux ...I also wish they would have created a fully functionalsnapshot / droplet of a Ubuntu/Apache/WebDNA server thatanyone could install and have running in just a few minuteson most any Linux VPS host.
