texte = 2380 Hi Stuart, Your Christmas story clearly explains the practical reason for using VPS hosts instead of running your own hardware. But the guys who continue to insist upon running their own hardware -- especially ancient MacOS hardware -- are never going to change. They are stubborn, inflexible, and unwilling to learn and do whatever it takes to have a modern system that avoids all their ongoing "run my own hardware" issues. I no longer remember exactly when I switched from running my own hardware to using VPS hosting, but I do remember that I switched while I was still living in Hawaii, and I moved from Hawaii in the year 2000, so I would say that I switched about two decades ago, or maybe a couple years earlier. So now it is 20+ years after I learned how and why VPS helps me to run a better system for my clients, yet we still have people here who do not get it, regardless of how much we try to convince them. I agree with everything you wrote. Several of us here have tried but failed to convince these "I still love my hardware" guys to just suck-it-up and make the switch to VPS hosting. But they continue to ignore our advice because their agenda is NOT saving time or having reliable servers that require minimal time and effort to maintain. And clearly they do not value their time at more than a few cents per hour, or they would not reconfigure a bad server 50 times and still not get it fixed. I'm tired of trying to convince these WebDNA programming colleagues that there's a better way. They seem incapable of learning from those of us who recognized how the industry was changing years or decades ago, and switched to VPS hosting long ago. Don't get me wrong. I used to be 100% dedicated to Apple Macintosh, too. I owned 5 of them in my early programming and hosting days and I loved them and the MacOS! But this dedication faded dramatically in the early 1990's as I learned how cheap and easy it was for me to stop wasting time and money running my own hardware, and just pay the professional hosting companies a minuscule pittance each month to do it for me.=20 Furthermore prices have dropped substantially since then, and at the same time hardware is much faster now, and reliability has increased dramatically. Right now I run three VPS's with three different hosts, each in a different city. They backup each other automatically every hour, and they backup each other's backups every 24 hours. This may sound like ridiculous redundancy, but ... Even if two of my three servers should go down at the same time, my clients will never be without a live server for more than an hour while the DNS changes propagate -- and it costs me less than $10 per month for all three servers: Server #1 =3D $5.00 per month Server #2 =3D $3.50 per month Server #3 =3D $0.83 per month (I pay this one $10 annually) Not only that, but these are all modern Linux servers that never seem to fail anyways. You might think that eventually these "I love my hardware" guys might want to give up their death-grips on their old equipment and start doing what the rest of us have been doing for ages. But I suspect that this is never going to happen. To each his own! And although I wish the best to all WebDNA programmers and hosts, I also wish WSC had made the decision years ago to stop building new WebDNA versions for Mac or Windows, and instead focused exclusively on Linux ... I also wish they would have created a fully functional snapshot / droplet of a Ubuntu/Apache/WebDNA server that anyone could install and have running in just a few minutes on most any Linux VPS host.
