texte = I want to address a couple of points here, not exclusively focused on Ken's technical questions. Be patient, I'll get to that ... First, one thing I think many on this list are missing is that the pricing on a new copy of Commerce Edition 5.0 with the same unlimited website/hostname licensing as 4.5.X is ... still $1,995. Same price with more functionality. The singular goal of the website/hostname licensing is to offer a LOWER price point for those entry-level customers that DON'T NEED unlimited websites/hostnames. For those that do need unlimited, we now have with 5.0 ... the SAME Commerce edition at the SAME price point with MORE FEATURES. And, now Developer Edition 5.0 has all the new features with the only exception being the content management application ... for free. Given the above, the basic issue is the upgrade pricing, and I've seen comments about past pricing that's all over the map. I also know that the 3.0->4.x upgrade pricing has been $895 for well over a year, but there have been case by case 'specials' from time to time ... but I'm not in sales. If you have an issue with upgrade pricing, then all the other distracting comments don't help, but I'm sure Doug is open to communicating with reasonable people on their needs.I've been hesitant to directly address some of the less than professional comments I've seen on this list. I've been involved with WebDNA now for about 18 months, and I can say that the people I work with on this team are very capable, high integrity folks working hard every day to have a positive impact on the product and this community. We are a dedicated team with ample resources, and SMSI is dedicated to the WebDNA products and technology for the long haul. With that said, our resources are not infinite, however, which means we must balance many tradeoffs daily, but I know that from 4.0.2 (released at the end of 2001), through to 4.5.1 released a few months ago, we have tried hard to focus on significantly improving quality and stability. No software product is ever 100% bug free, but we have stressed making each release an improvement over the last, and responding to critical issues as rapidly as we can. I know a few people have had problems on specific platforms, and often these have been platforms that were not certified with that release, yet Scott and Le have often been able to provide a specific customer patches, even for non-certified platforms. The people on this team can't answer for what may have happened three, five years ago because all of us weren't here working on this product then. All I can say is that these people are incredible by any measure, and that we continue to work hard to make WebDNA the best it can be given the time we've been involved with the product. So I will take exception to anyone who wants to compare 4.0.2, 4.5.0, 4.5.1, or 5.0 to anything that happened several years ago. Now to address Ken's confusion over folder 'sandbox' versus website/hostname licensing: First, these two items are completely unrelated, as originally stated in Scott Anderson's contribution on this topic dated 2/15/03 (please read it). They should be viewed entirely separately. A sandbox is bound to a folder. You can have 1-N sandbox folders for a given website, or any number of websites can share a single sandbox folder ... and this feature is enabled in all editions. Any folder can be designated as a Sandbox, which then gets its own instance of Prefs file, users.db, triggers.db, emailer preferences, global folder, email folder, and admin templates. This essentially allows you to bind the entire behavior of an instance of WebDNA to a particular folder, whereas in 4.X and before the WebDNA behavior was bound to the entire server. Now for Website/hostname licensing: With 5.0, on Partner and Commerce editions, there are now TWO serial numbers. The Primary serial number identifies the 'edition' you are purchasing, and by default will support a single Website/hostname. The additional secondary serial number defines how many Website/hostnames will be permitted ... which can be 2 through infinity. The secondary serial number is based upon the primary, so it will only work on the server instance where the primary license is installed. You can have as many sub-folders off of a given Website/hostname that you want ... only the number of unique website/hostnames is metered by the secondary license (www.mystore.com, beta.mystore.com, alpha.mystore.com are three website/hostnames).
